Panda can also be treated

China has started construction of a unique center that will cater for about 40 giant pandas with comfortable accommodation and exclusive treatments, Chinese media said in a report Thursday.

The facility, which is expected to be completed in 2012, will cover an area of about 51 hectares in the southwestern province of Sichuan, China and will cost 210 million yuan (32 million U.S. dollars).

The Hong Kong government will provide 130 million yuan for the project, with remaining funds coming from private investors.

Mission center will save the giant pandas living wild and doing research on disease prevention and control of endangered species, said Zhang Hemin, head of the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda.

"This facility will not only develop separate panda breeding and treatment of disease, but also prevent cross-infection of pandas and people, because we sometimes have to take them to hospital for treatment of humans," added Zhang.

Giant panda is among the world's most endangered species extinct. Over the last 20 years, Chinese experts have raised 315 animals cute animals from captive pandas.

Statistics of the State Forestry Administration show that about 1,600 pandas live in the wild, with another 300 living in zoos around the world.
